Nor is position always a guarantee of antiquity. The consummation of the triumph of the actor over the play is perhaps the productions of the Guitry. When we thus despair of finding any force upon earth which can check the triumph of injustice, we naturally appeal to heaven, and hope that the great Author of our nature will himself execute hereafter what all the principles which he has given us for the direction of our conduct prompt us to attempt even here; that he will complete the plan which he himself has thus taught us to begin; and will, in a life to come, render to every one according to the works which he has performed in this world. We find none of the triumphant buoyancy of health and spirit as in the _Titian’s Mistress_, nor the luxurious softness of the portrait of the Marchioness of Guasto, nor the flexible, tremulous sensibility, nor the anxious attention to passing circumstances, nor the familiar look of the lady by Vandyke; on the contrary, there is a complete unity and concentration of expression, the whole is wrought up and moulded into one intense feeling, but that feeling fixed on objects remote, refined, and etherial as the form of the fair supplicant. In truth, the reality itself was but a dream. What I have here stated is I believe the whole extent and compass of the law of association. And Nature, indeed, seems to have so happily adjusted our sentiments of approbation and disapprobation, to the conveniency both of the individual and of the society, that after the strictest examination it will be found, I believe, that this is universally the case. On the other hand, it would not be difficult to instance words formerly common in good literature whose use would now cause something of a sensation. Put in this way the library’s duty seems clear enough. It is possible that at bottom it has really no higher phonetic character, but several facts have combined to give us a better understanding of its structure. Finding in many cases that the first apprehension and momentary fear of danger was gone by, but that the reason for avoiding it still remained the same, the mind would be easily led to seek for the true cause of action in something more fixed and permanent than the fleeting ideas of remote objects, and to require that every object whether of desire or aversion should have some stronger hold on the individual than it’s momentary effect on his imagination before it became an object of serious pursuit, or the contrary. Few or none of them have reflected on the unphilosophical character of the inquiry as thus crudely put. Ferdinand and Isabella, moreover, in 1480, decreed that all who desired counsel should be allowed the privilege, those who were poor being furnished at the public expense, and no torture could be inflicted before this was complied with. A community is not a community unless it has political and religious interests. They may prevent us from mistaking the simple, though modified, changes of the natural ebb and flow of our animal spirits, for an exacerbation or new accession of insanity,—and thus warn us from treating the patient with unnecessary restraint, as though he were suffering from a new attack, and from blindly endeavouring to cure a hopeless case by the wanton administration of strong and deleterious drugs, which in most instances would destroy health, as well as the remnant of the faculties: “In the diseases of the mind, as well as in all other ailments, it is an art of no little importance, to administer medicines properly; but it is an art of much greater and more difficult acquisition, to know when to suspend, or altogether omit them.” {151} _No._ 8.—_Admitted_ 1783. Virtue too, according to Epicurus, did not deserve to be pursued for its own sake, ap us history critical thinking nor was itself one of the ultimate objects of natural appetite, but was eligible only upon account of its tendency to prevent pain and to procure ease and pleasure. Mr. Forbidden at length to employ the duel in settling their differences, and endeavoring, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, to obtain exemption from the ordeal, they finally accepted compurgation as the special mode of trial adapted to members of the church, and for a long period we find it recognized as such in all the collections of canons and writings of ecclesiastical jurists.[77] From this fact it obtained its appellation of _purgatio canonica_, or canonical compurgation. When interested in cases involving the judicial duel they were therefore allowed the privilege of substituting a champion, who took their place and did battle for the justice of their cause. And it is surely desirable that almost all the routine processes of library work, and the others to some extent, should be standardized.

It is to be noted that many situations involving not only an irritating amount of inconvenience but real suffering may excite this kind of laughter in the vulgar. These laws, which offer so creditable a contrast to the legislation of other lands, remained in force and were embodied in the Recopilacion.[1501] CHAPTER V.
